Best song Oscar etc.

For the second year in a row the Academy chose the worst of the nominees (and truly pedestrian effort) to give the award to on Sunday night. Melissa' Etheridge's "I Need To Wake Up,"  a whining, self-flagellating ode to global warming featured in Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth." Easily the best song heard on the broadcast was Ennio Morricone's beautiful "I Knew I Loved You" with lyrics by Marilyn and Alan Bergman which was sung by Celine Dion in a tribute to the great Italian film composer. Last year was the all-time nadir as the Academy embarrassed itself by selecting "It's Hard Out Here For a P*mp," (warning - Oscar-winning filth content) sure to go down in "music" history for such lyrics as (I'm not making these up):

You know it's hard out here for a p*mp (you ain't knowin)
When he tryin to get his money for the rent (you ain't knowin)
For the Cadillacs and gas money spent (you ain't knowin)
'Cause a whole lot of b****** talkin s***(you ain't knowin)

You didn't know "p*mp" rhymed with "rent"  which rhymes, of course, with  "s***," did you?
Sure "Moon River" and "Over the Rainbow" and "Mona Lisa" along with most of the picks over the last 60-plus years, were pretty little tunes, but just try to get the chorus of "P*mp" out of your head. It's infectious, kinda' like, oh, I don't know... gonorrrhea.
BTW, the server wouldn't allow me to write the word "p*mp" without the *'s.

Think women are second-class citizens here in the West? Think you're oppressed? Got it pretty rough, do you? Get your opinions of this patriarchal world from classes in "Feminist Theory" at college? Get a clue.

Great new blog over at National Review Online called Planet Gore. And here's a pithy article concerning a few of the many problems with Al's dishonest and mal-informed movie.
