I have a friend who has a relative very highly positioned in the Obama campaign. They recently dined together and talked about the Illinois senator. Some excerpts from my friend's e-mail about the conversation:
...their argument is Obama handsome and and well spoken. Speaks for
the masses and wants everyone to be involved and represented. An updated
JFK that cares more about poor people. Any questions about his positions -
they don't know. Because he is an outsider to DC, he hasn't quite put them
altogether yet, though working hard on it. One thing they did know was
Obama was against the Iraq war from the beginning. When asked why and how
he knew it wasn't a good idea, when from Clinton on down the rest of the
Democratic elite were in favor, don't know. He['s] almost a Messianic presence
that will lead us to peace and understanding....
I wrote back:
I would love to talk to them about him even though I realize it would be futile. He's handsome? We'll dismiss that out of hand as a actual qualification. Well-spoken? So was Hitler. Speaks for the masses? Oh really! How does he know that? Wants everyone to be represented and involved? How nice. Then we can all have a cookie and take a nap before recess. A DC outsider? I suppose, if you don't count the 2-plus years he's been a senator. But that's supposed to mean he hasn't thought about any of this stuff before? Not even before declaring himself ready to be President? Give me a break. He won't state his positions because he's a screaming leftie and the sooner he does that the sooner he'll have to start answering tough questions about all of them. I'm sorry, but I think it's really mostly guilty white people patronizingly latching onto a black person. Not that I have a strong opinion about any of this.
Are the kids in your elementary school not acknowledging themselves as "political beings"? Have they yet to embrace the inevitably logical concept of collectivism? Do they play with their Legos without a sense of "social justice"? Building structures that aren't of "standard size"? Do they have a disturbing habit of acting like 7 and 8 year-olds? Send them to school at the
HIlltop Children's Center in Seattle for re-education. Or we will send them for you.
